I use Windows 10 on desktop and I am looking for window manager doing one particular task: save size and position of each application window and restore them when the application is launched again. For instance, I sometimes change the size and position of my text editor, but I usually want it to open exactly on the same place and the same size that it had before last closing.

Snapping windows to a grid is nice to have, but not necessary. AquaSnap is not an option, because it can manipulate the existing windows but does not remember the position of closed ones.

I am planning to create a custom distro based on Ubuntu which will be free but I want to keep it closed source and only accept donations so is it possible to do so legally? If yes are there any licenses that I can use for free with my distro?

Please help me understand this whole thing about loose and strict source routing

Source routing can be used with with Traceroute.

The idea is to specify what is called a Loose Source Route, which specifies a system through which the packets should pass through before proceeding on to their destination.

Unfortunately, source routing has a great potential for abuse, and therefore most network administrators block all source-routed packets at their border routers.

So, in practice, Loose Source Routes aren't going to work.

Out of curiosity, I ran GNU ddrescue on a Seagate ST1000LM024 HN-M101MBB hard drive with known bad sectors, and then I visualized the ddrescue mapfile with ddrescueview.

When I zoomed in, this interesting patte appeared:

ddrescueview screenshot

The green gaps (contiguous good sectors) are often 2440 logical sectors (1249280 bytes) large, and the red sections (bad and probably physically damaged sectors) are almost always 1 physical sector (4 logical sectors, 4096 bytes) large.

Keeping this patte in mind, I did a calculation to estimate how many sectors would be on the track. The hard drive spins at 5400 rotations per minute, the sustained read rate at that part of the drive is about 109 mebibytes per second (I tested this on a drive of the same model with no bad sectors), one track goes around 360 degrees, and a logical sector is 512 bytes.

((109MiB/s / 5400rpm * 360 degrees) / 512 bytes) = 2480

The estimation shows that there are about 2480 logical sectors in the affected track. The patte happens every 2444 logical sectors.

This suggests that the physical damage looks like a very thin strip heading inwards practically tangent to the circle of the platter. The thin strip fits in an arc less than 0.001639°. This damage, whatever it is, appears to be a microscopic gash.

There are other characteristics of the patte that I can't quite make sense of.

  • The bad sectors only exist in the first 1/6 of the drive, the outer edges, with no clear patte of where the bands of pattes appear.
  • The pattes don't appear to be one long gash; they're more like a dotted/dashed line ("┋"):

ddrescueview screenshot

Why would damage appear like this? What could create such an orderly damage patte?

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/36011878/howto-edit-source-code-virtualbox-5-0-16-so-that-high-resolution-virtual-desktop

Using VirtualBox 5.0.16 and WinXP, my computer (1280x800p) can have 3840x1024p virtual desktop. But the virtual desktop is with scrollbar vertical and horizontal.

What I want is: No problem with those scroll bar, but it would be very nice to have virtual desktop that can automatically scroll to the right when my mouse go to the right perimeter (and all direction right, left, up and down).

Anyone know what code to be revised in the VirtualBox Source Code? (what is the filename, where, and what is the code)

Unless you tell it to wipe or repartition your other partitions, they will be left intact. However, now is the time to make sure you have a backup of this data. If you mess up the installation, you may accidentally ask Windows to erase the data and then you'll be thankful for the backups.

DISCLAIMER: I'm not a computer-genius by any means.

I recently installed SteamOS on a disk partition in the hopes of trying to dual boot it with Windows 10, only to find out that even following the steps for a dual boot guide, my Win10 boot loader had been deleted. I then deleted the SteamOS/Linux partition from a USB recovery using diskpart in the command prompt. I then used the same commandprompt to type

bcdboot.exe H:Windows H:

to use my Windows installation on the H:-drive. The boot is working as long as I use the boot menu when starting up, otherwise it just goes into grub-rescue, which I'm not interested in doing. My question is now: How do I boot from the H:-drive installation as default? Alteatively, how do I stop my computer from going into grub rescue?

To help with ssh security on my centos7 server, I am trying to install google authenticator. Problem is, the guides I have found all say to do as a first step:

sudo yum install google-authenticator

However, I get a message that google-authenticator isn't available.

Do I need to point this to a certain repo? If so, how do I do that? (I'm a bit new to doing sysadmin-style work on CentOS7.

When doing some research, I found this out: https://www.howtoforge.com/tutorial/secure-ssh-with-google-authenticator-on-centos-7/

If you scroll down to the Idea, user mutwakel yassen mentioned "wgetting" the tar ball from the code itself, but looking at the link they provided, it points to the open source version of the Google app, which from my understanding, might be out of sync from the official Google version, which makes me conceed if it will work with my phone app.

Does anyone know if the official packages are in the repo, or if there is a way to install the Google version in other means? Or has anyone gotten the most recent version of Google Authenticator (at the time of writing, 4.44) to work with the open source project?

Succinctly: I want to wipe this machine, and install something that will get me closer to the command line, but also easily integrate a nice slim GUI that draws on Windows and Mac.

In more detail:

I have a Windows seven machine with some weird file structure. I don't have admin or root privileges. I've got a boot disk for Windows seven. I took a UNIX class and thought I'd be fine adding a partition of Ubuntu studio... And I was not fine. Attempts to fix this on my own has made it worse... There were some hardware issues, so I may need to repurpose this to parts. It was a hand me down, and the previous user liked clickbait a lot... Which makes me want to not give up if it is a software problem.

It boots into Windows 7, but Is really slow. I can't log into either of the Ubuntu partitions, and I don't know how passwords got onto them. The installs seemed... Very sketchy. By the time I hit a command line, I tried ls and couldn't figure out what exactly had happened. A friend suggested arch Linux, but by that point I couldn't get back into the partition. Another friend gave me a flash drive to boot from. Bad timing led to leaving and allowing the battery to die mid install.

Right now I'd love to replace every bit with a zero, then install something that will have a GUI, a nice lack of granting execute permissions, and beginner friendly documentation.

After that, functionality for a virtual machine, specifically Windows, with the intention of using solidworks and some other programs that the college I'm attending only has Windows licences for would be nice.

A DAW would be very nice as well, something like pro-tools with support for focusright interfaces etc.

Also, as a note on Windows 10, it failed to install on this machine, repeatedly, which was one of the factors leading to the Ubuntu installs.

I have a bash script where $DIR is a directory name that may contain spaces.

This:

gives the error "No such file or directory". There is no file literally named "*.MOV"; I want the * to expand into multiple arguments - one per matching filename.

Eg:

rm some folder/foo.MOV some folder/bar.MOV

How can I do this?

What I am trying to so is: Open a WInSCP-Session using a private key instead of a password.

The simple Password-Approach works:

 WinSCP.exe root:[email protected]

But the next step, using the key, does not work. Just to be clear. I mean this key: enter image description here

I tried:

 WinSCP.exe root:[email protected] /privatekey "path/to/private_key.ppk"

But WinSCP ignores the parameter and asks for the password. So, what did I forget?

I have a PC with an Asus motherboard running Windows 7 Pro. Yesterday I installed latest Windows updates, restarted, and shortly afterwards hibeated the machine.

This moing on un-hibeating I got a black screen with:

The system found unauthorized changes on the firmware, operating system or UEFI drivers

It also said:

Go to BIOS Setup > Advanced > Boot and change the current boot device into other secured boot devices

The only way I was able to get it to boot was by changing the BIOS secure boot OS to 'other OS' i.e. I think this means secure boot is effectively disabled.

There have been no hardware changes to this machine recently (last thing I changed was adding more RAM about 3 weeks ago, and it has successfully rebooted multiple times since then). There is no CD/DVD or bootable USB device connected.

I'm running a full MSE scan just to be sure / paranoid. Is it possible the Windows updates caused this? Should I be conceed about disabling secure boot? I've tried setting it back to enable however the original message reappears.

I can ping -c 3 osmc.local and get 0% loss. However when I try to access a service e.g nzbget or transmission via a chrome on my Android device I get DNS could not be resolved. It works fine on my Ubuntu PC and my Chromebook, any ideas?

I have my machine set to wa me when the battery is at 25% and got to hybrid sleep at 15%.

Well, I must have been extremely focussed on what I was working on because I didn't see the waing bubbles and suddenly lost power and some amount of work.

Is there a way to force the system to go to hibeation/sleep regardless what I am doing or wa me in such a way so I cannot miss it, a system dialog box perhaps?

Thanks.

On Windows machine,

I start a server on port 62325

$ netsh firewall show state shows:
Ports currently open on all network interfaces:
Port Protocol Version Program
-------------------------------------------------------------------
62325 TCP Any (null)

But when another client on different machine tries to connect to that port it shows on that client machine:

Ero 10061 : No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it

Though loopback(127.0.0.1) for a client on the same machine works.
