I use Windows 10 on desktop and I am looking for window manager doing one particular task: save size and position of each application window and restore them when the application is launched again. For instance, I sometimes change the size and position of my text editor, but I usually want it to open exactly on the same place and the same size that it had before last closing.

Snapping windows to a grid is nice to have, but not necessary. AquaSnap is not an option, because it can manipulate the existing windows but does not remember the position of closed ones.

I am plaing to create a custom distro based on Ubuntu which will be free but I want to keep it closed source and only accept donations so is it possible to do so legally? If yes are there any licenses that I can use for free with my distro?

Please help me understand this whole thing about loose and strict source routing

Source routing can be used with with Traceroute.

The idea is to specify what is called a Loose Source Route, which specifies a system through which the packets should pass through before proceeding on to their destination.

Unfortunately, source routing has a great potential for abuse, and therefore most network administrators block all source-routed packets at their border routers.

So, in practice, Loose Source Routes aren't going to work.

Out of curiosity, I ran GNU ddrescue on a Seagate ST1000LM024 HN-M101MBB hard drive with known bad sectors, and then I visualized the ddrescue mapfile with ddrescueview.

When I zoomed in, this interesting patte appeared:

ddrescueview screenshot

The green gaps (contiguous good sectors) are often 2440 logical sectors (1249280 bytes) large, and the red sections (bad and probably physically damaged sectors) are almost always 1 physical sector (4 logical sectors, 4096 bytes) large.

Keeping this patte in mind, I did a calculation to estimate how many sectors would be on the track. The hard drive spins at 5400 rotations per minute, the sustained read rate at that part of the drive is about 109 mebibytes per second (I tested this on a drive of the same model with no bad sectors), one track goes around 360 degrees, and a logical sector is 512 bytes.

((109MiB/s / 5400rpm * 360 degrees) / 512 bytes) = 2480

The estimation shows that there are about 2480 logical sectors in the affected track. The patte happens every 2444 logical sectors.

This suggests that the physical damage looks like a very thin strip heading inwards practically tangent to the circle of the platter. The thin strip fits in an arc less than 0.001639°. This damage, whatever it is, appears to be a microscopic gash.

There are other characteristics of the patte that I can't quite make sense of.

  • The bad sectors only exist in the first 1/6 of the drive, the outer edges, with no clear patte of where the bands of pattes appear.
  • The pattes don't appear to be one long gash; they're more like a dotted/dashed line ("┋"):

ddrescueview screenshot

Why would damage appear like this? What could create such an orderly damage patte?

This is what I know:

text-mode 80x25 characters. I need to put character 'B' on column 8, row 5. What's the formula to know this answer?

EDIT:

How would I do this for graphical mode? For example:

resolution of 1024x768

yellow pixel on (123,456)

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/36011878/howto-edit-source-code-virtualbox-5-0-16-so-that-high-resolution-virtual-desktop

Using VirtualBox 5.0.16 and WinXP, my computer (1280x800p) can have 3840x1024p virtual desktop. But the virtual desktop is with scrollbar vertical and horizontal.

What I want is: No problem with those scroll bar, but it would be very nice to have virtual desktop that can automatically scroll to the right when my mouse go to the right perimeter (and all direction right, left, up and down).

Anyone know what code to be revised in the VirtualBox Source Code? (what is the filename, where, and what is the code)

Unless you tell it to wipe or repartition your other partitions, they will be left intact. However, now is the time to make sure you have a backup of this data. If you mess up the installation, you may accidentally ask Windows to erase the data and then you'll be thankful for the backups.

I'd like to use borg as a backup solution. I only like to back up home directory, so I run borg as non privileged user. Which rights do I need to assign to the borg repository to make it work?

DISCLAIMER: I'm not a computer-genius by any means.

I recently installed SteamOS on a disk partition in the hopes of trying to dual boot it with Windows 10, only to find out that even following the steps for a dual boot guide, my Win10 boot loader had been deleted. I then deleted the SteamOS/Linux partition from a USB recovery using diskpart in the command prompt. I then used the same commandprompt to type

bcdboot.exe H:Windows H:

to use my Windows installation on the H:-drive. The boot is working as long as I use the boot menu when starting up, otherwise it just goes into grub-rescue, which I'm not interested in doing. My question is now: How do I boot from the H:-drive installation as default? Alteatively, how do I stop my computer from going into grub rescue?

To help with ssh security on my centos7 server, I am trying to install google authenticator. Problem is, the guides I have found all say to do as a first step:

sudo yum install google-authenticator

However, I get a message that google-authenticator isn't available.

Do I need to point this to a certain repo? If so, how do I do that? (I'm a bit new to doing sysadmin-style work on CentOS7.

When doing some research, I found this out: https://www.howtoforge.com/tutorial/secure-ssh-with-google-authenticator-on-centos-7/

If you scroll down to the Idea, user mutwakel yassen mentioned "wgetting" the tar ball from the code itself, but looking at the link they provided, it points to the open source version of the Google app, which from my understanding, might be out of sync from the official Google version, which makes me conceed if it will work with my phone app.

Does anyone know if the official packages are in the repo, or if there is a way to install the Google version in other means? Or has anyone gotten the most recent version of Google Authenticator (at the time of writing, 4.44) to work with the open source project?

Succinctly: I want to wipe this machine, and install something that will get me closer to the command line, but also easily integrate a nice slim GUI that draws on Windows and Mac.

In more detail:

I have a Windows seven machine with some weird file structure. I don't have admin or root privileges. I've got a boot disk for Windows seven. I took a UNIX class and thought I'd be fine adding a partition of Ubuntu studio... And I was not fine. Attempts to fix this on my own has made it worse... There were some hardware issues, so I may need to repurpose this to parts. It was a hand me down, and the previous user liked clickbait a lot... Which makes me want to not give up if it is a software problem.

It boots into Windows 7, but Is really slow. I can't log into either of the Ubuntu partitions, and I don't know how passwords got onto them. The installs seemed... Very sketchy. By the time I hit a command line, I tried ls and couldn't figure out what exactly had happened. A friend suggested arch Linux, but by that point I couldn't get back into the partition. Another friend gave me a flash drive to boot from. Bad timing led to leaving and allowing the battery to die mid install.

Right now I'd love to replace every bit with a zero, then install something that will have a GUI, a nice lack of granting execute permissions, and begier friendly documentation.

After that, functionality for a virtual machine, specifically Windows, with the intention of using solidworks and some other programs that the college I'm attending only has Windows licences for would be nice.

A DAW would be very nice as well, something like pro-tools with support for focusright interfaces etc.

Also, as a note on Windows 10, it failed to install on this machine, repeatedly, which was one of the factors leading to the Ubuntu installs.

I have a bash script where $DIR is a directory name that may contain spaces.

This:

rm "$DIR/*.MOV"

gives the error "No such file or directory". There is no file literally named "*.MOV"; I want the * to expand into multiple arguments - one per matching filename.

Eg:

rm some folder/foo.MOV some folder/bar.MOV

How can I do this?

What I am trying to so is: Open a WInSCP-Session using a private key instead of a password.

The simple Password-Approach works:

 WinSCP.exe root:[email protected]

But the next step, using the key, does not work. Just to be clear. I mean this key: enter image description here

I tried:

 WinSCP.exe root:[email protected] /privatekey "path/to/private_key.ppk"

But WinSCP ignores the parameter and asks for the password. So, what did I forget?

I have a PC with an Asus motherboard ruing Windows 7 Pro. Yesterday I installed latest Windows updates, restarted, and shortly afterwards hibeated the machine.

This moing on un-hibeating I got a black screen with:

The system found unauthorized changes on the firmware,operating system or UEFI drivers

It also said:

Go to BIOS Setup > Advanced > Boot and change the current boot device into other secured boot devices

The only way I was able to get it to boot was by changing the BIOS secure boot OS to 'other OS' i.e. I think this means secure boot is effectively disabled.

There have been no hardware changes to this machine recently (last thing I changed was adding more RAM about 3 weeks ago, and it has successfully rebooted multiple times since then). There is no CD/DVD or bootable USB device coected.

I'm ruing a full MSE scan just to be sure / paranoid. Is it possible the Windows updates caused this? Should I be conceed about disabling secure boot? I've tried setting it back to enable however the original message reappears.

On Windows machine,

I start a server on port 62325

$ netsh firewall show state shows:
Ports currently open on all network interfaces:
Port   Protocol  Version  Program

62325  TCP       Any      (null)

But when another client on different machine tries to coect to that port it shows on that client machine:

Ero 10061 : No coection could be made because the target machine actively refused it

Though loopback(127.0.0.1) for a client on the same machine works.

i used the awesome Gist to setup unico together with nginx. It works perfect so far. But now i have the need to serve a small app with basically static files for a subdomain. I create a server block like this

server {
       listen 80;
       listen [::]:80;
       server_name sub.domain;
       access_log /var/log/nginx/sub.log main;
       root /srv/dir;
       index index.html;

location / {
      try_files $uri $uri/ =404;
  }
}

The root dir is owned by my regular user.

When i now access the URL my logs show me this output:

request: "GET / HTTP/1.1", host: "sub.domain"
2016/03/19 08:34:37 [crit] 30308#0: *7 stat() "PUBLIC_RAILS_APP_DIR"    failed (13: Permission denied), client: IP.IP.IP.IP, server: _, request:    "GET / HTTP/1.1", host: "sub.domain"
2016/03/19 08:34:37 [crit] 30308#0: *7 coect() to unix:/home/DIR_SHARED_SOCKET_UNICORN_SOCK failed (13: Permission denied) while coecting to upstream, client: IP.IP.IP.IP, server: _, request: "GET / HTTP/1.1", upstream: "http://unix:DIR_SHARED_SOCKET_UNICORN_SOCK", host: "sub.domain.com"
2016/03/19 08:34:37 [error] 30308#0: *7 open() "/home/tim/app/public/500.html" failed (13: Permission denied), client: IP.IP.IP.IP, server: _, request: "GET / HTTP/1.1", upstream: "http://unix:/home///shared/sockets/unico.sock/", host: "sub.domain.com"

What do i need to change in the nginx.conf to allow the server block? I am not familiar with NginX settings. Thanks in advance

I want to perform two key mappings that are nonstandard:

  1. Caps Lock key will become another CTRL key.
  2. Some combination of keys (ideally, Shift CapsLock) will still be able to do the job normally performed by the CapsLock key -- toggling capitals.

It appears that the standard answers — SmartKeys, AutoHotKey, and Microsoft Keyboard Creator (MSKC) — don't map the CapsLock key, and/or don't map a combination of keys. I would love to be shown otherwise.

I am capable of editing a keyboard (.klc) file or the registry, if I only knew what to put there or what to change.

FYI: I have read that Shift+CapsLock does the CapsLock job on a Japanese keyboard.

Before you ask: why would I want to do that? Because I'm a Unix guy, so I leaed to expect the Cntl key to the left of the "a" where it is handiest. And because sometimes you REALLY WANT to type several words in call caps.

I am tying to record video and audio using openRTSP and ffmpeg. The below command record video but the it doesn't contain audio.

openRTSP -D 10 -v -t -c -b 800000 rtsp://wowzaec2demo.streamlock.net/vod/mp4:BigBuckBuy_115k.mov | ./ffmpeg -r 15 -i - -codec copy -hls_list_size 65535 -hls_time 2 "./1/live.m3u8"

I have checked the stream using ffplay whether it's contain audio using below command,

./ffplay openRTSP -D 10 -v -t -c -b 800000 rtsp://wowzaec2demo.streamlock.net/vod/mp4:BigBuckBuy_115k.mov | ./ffmpeg -r 15 -i - -codec copy -hls_list_size 65535 -hls_time 2 "./1/live.m3u8"

and which works fine.

So in above command does -codec copy stands for both audio and video or only for video?

and I can here audio in that

Firefox has no such setting.

That's a terribly terse answer, but I'm afraid it's all there is. Firefox usually errs on the side of not letting you view a site at all in case of some problems rather than letting you override it even if you want to.

That said, if you're getting cert waings for everything on a private network, it's almost certain that the local IT group is ruing an SSL interception proxy. You're not going to get to the inteet without accepting their certificate, so here's how you do that:

  • Open up the certificate properties for one of the pages you get an error on (after adding the exception in Firefox) by clicking the lock in the address bar, the right arrow, and then "more information".

  • In the Security tab, click on View Certificate, and then the Details tab on the new window.

  • Under Certificate Hierarchy, examine the name of the topmost certificate. It's probably going to be from a security vendor of some kind like Symantec or Barracuda.

  • Click on it, and then go to Export at the bottom.

  • Save the file somewhere accessible

  • Close the security and certificate windows, and open your Firefox settings (top right hamburger menu, Options)

  • Click Advanced on the bottom left, and then click View Certificates

  • Click the Authorities tab, and then Import

  • Locate the file you just saved

  • Accept the waing.

It is very important you don't get into a habit of doing this procedure, and only to do it when you know with COMPLETE certainty that the certificate is legitimate. I caot emphasize this enough - call the IT people and have them verify the name on the certificate if you're even slightly unsure, since now you've just told Firefox to accept any and all certificates that the CA you just imported signed. You will receive no more waings of that sort for this cert. If you import a malicious certificate, you've just shot yourself in the foot.

I have two underwater network video cameras on a deep-sea observatory that are tethered to land by a fiber optic cable and stream video data back to shore. I'd like to find a way to automatically cut or merge these video files based on their timeline. Can if it can even be done? If so, how?

Problem: The underwater cameras write a file (.asf) anytime their network coection is disrupted. This means clips of random duration, making cataloging the data difficult. Ideally, we want files of an hour in length that begin and end on the hours (e.g.: Camera1_00:00-00:59.asf, Camera1_01:00-01:59.asf, etc.). The filename of each video contains the time-stamp of the first frame. No time information is stored in the metadata.

Question: How do I join these video files and split them on the hour?
My best guess so far is something along these lines (but I have no clue how to do it):

  1. Extract the initial time-stamp from the file name
  2. Obtain the duration of the file
  3. Add the duration to the initial time stamp to get start/stop UTC time
  4. [somehow] join the videos until I have crossed over an hour boundary
  5. Split the video at the hour (I guess the time would be computed from duration and start time?)
  6. Save the 1-hour video as finished, and save to use for the start of the next hour
  7. Repeat

Note that we do have some gaps in video data, and the ideal solution could either:

  • Write multiple files for an hour (e.g.: 03:00-03:15 and 03:17-03:59)
  • Write one file that is less than an hour in length, joining the gaps with a few black frames

I have no idea how to do any of this. Is there software that can do it for me? Do I have to write some code to do this? If the latter, which language is best? What about ffmpeg?

I am open to better ideas. Thank you in advance for your help!

When trying to convert some files to lower case I noticed something which seems strange to me.

When executing this in bash:

find . -iname 'test' | while IFS='n' read item; do mv $item $(echo $item | tr [:upper:] [:lower:]); done

And the source and target are unchanged for mv, I get the following error:

mv: caot move '.test' to a subdirectory of itself, './test/test'

Where does the './test/test' come from? When echoing instead of executing mv, I get 'mv ./test ./test'. I tested this both on FreeBSD 10 and Debian 8.2.0 with the same results. What am I missing?

I'm trying to get a NAT setup for a specific range of IP addresses. I run a QEMU/KVM hypervisor with a local bridge that has ip range 10.0.0.0/8. On that bridge, I have several IP ranges for different machine classes. A couple of those ranges are used to provide exteal IP adresses to the VMs via 1-to-1 NAT. This works perfectly.

Now, I want to set up a range of IP addresses for machines that get inteet access via regular NAT (think consumer router). The IP range is 10.0.0.5-10.0.0.150. After searching online, I tried to add a rule like:

iptables -t nat -m iprange -A PREROUTING -i eth0 --dst-range 10.0.0.5-10.0.0.150 -j MASQUERADE

iptables isn't set up to block any traffic. Still, the NAT isn't working. My VM can ping the hypervisor, but can't ping any hosts on the Inteet. IP packet forwarding is enabled.

Any ideas?

I have an .MKV file and the subtitles are incorrect

subitltes caption

I tried with different encondings as this answer states, but I with no luck. The subtitles are embedded inside the file so I can't open them in notepad++ to verify if they are ok..

What else can I do ? Since there are many files, and they all have the same issue, I don't think there was a problem when downloading them.

This is on Windows 7, VLC Version 2.2.1

I've got a MacBook Pro (2015) and it has no input audio...but it does have a third coection for TRRS jacks to accommodate headset microphones. So I soldered a DIY converter, coecting a quarter inch (amp size) to the microphone ring of a 3.5 mm. I'm sure I did the soldering right because when I plug it into my iPhone it records just fine. But the MacBook doesn't recognize it as a "microphone" and therefore any and all recording comes from the built in microphone. What can I do to force recognition of my guitar amp?
